So what exactly is Coaching?

The word Coaching seems to be branded everywhere these days and there has been a rise of coaches since I became qualified as a life coach and NLP Master practitioner 12 years ago!  A rise is always followed by a demand, so what exactly is Coaching and how can it benefit you?

Life coaching has become a staple on television, with coaches helping sort out the lives of single men, ugly ducklings, sexually unsatisfied wives and other women in shows like “Nip/Tuck,” “The Swan,” “Starting Over” and “Modern Men.” Life coaches, with their vague self-help title, have also come in for considerable skepticism and ribbing. So, what is Coaching and how does it differ from psychotherapy?

“The difference between life coaching and therapy is that psychotherapy is about helping people heal their wounds,” said Phil Towle, a psychotherapist and life coach, “and coaching is about helping people achieve the highest level of their fulfillment or happiness or success, whether they’re wounded or not.”

To put it more simply, Life coaching is specifically for those people WILLING and WANTING to make inner and outer changes in their lives.

Successful people hire coaches. Yes, coaching is a secret that some of the most successful business people share. Hiring a coach is one of the best things you can do for yourself in business. Guess what? It’s also one of the best things you can do for your personal life. Coaching in the area of money, career, improved communication skills, weight loss, dating and relationships can help you reach your goals much faster than you would on your own. Getting the insights of a coach can help you overcome the obstacles that you encounter in daily life.

Another great reason to hire a coach is to help you overcome your Past self-limiting beliefs. In my experience the reason why so many people struggle to achieve their goals is because of events which have occurred in the past. Our past conditioning creates self-limiting beliefs and the only way to clear these beliefs is through NLP. When a coach is trained in NLP and hypnotherapy, they are able to work with clients on clearing their blocks so they can successfully achieve all their goals.

Our beliefs are at the core of who we are. Beliefs guide our decisions and behavior in all areas of life. They determine what we think is or is not possible. Often, they prove to be self-fulfilling prophecies. Some of our beliefs are not fully our own, but rather blindly taken on from others. Once a belief is formed, we work overtime to prove it right, even if the belief is something negative like ‚’Nobody likes me’ or ‘I am a failure’. The great news is you don’t have to let your beliefs govern you and you can consciously make changes to what you believe. This is what life coaching mixed with NLP can do for you.

In the first half of the 20th century the world believed that it was impossible to run a mile under four minutes. When, on May 6th 1954, Roger Bannister ran a mile in 3.59 minutes, everyone was in awe. Then, a curious development took place. Within the following year many other runners ran the mile under four minutes. It was as if a spell had been broken. Suddenly the belief was changed to ‘it was possible’ and this created results.

Some of the beliefs we hold give us great strength and empowerment. Studies show that, on average, people who believe they are healthy live 7 years longer than those who think they are unhealthy, regardless of their actual health condition at the time of the survey.

Other beliefs zap our energy. They tell us that we cannot achieve our goals or that we are not worthy of other people’s acceptance. Those kinds of beliefs are called ‘Limiting Beliefs’ in NLP. They typically sound like ‘I am ugly’ or ‘I will never be successful’ or ‘money is evil’.
